Chandigarh/Kullu, June 20, 2017: Youth from the scenic hills and valleys of Kullu welcomed the HP Olympic Torch with great enthusiasm. The torch run, which began in Shimla on 17th June, crossed Joginder Nagar and Kullu today. The torch run is a precursor to the Himachal Pradesh State Olympic Games, which are scheduled to be held at Hamirpur from June 22nd – 25th June.

Kopal, a student from Kullu expressed her delight, “I am thrilled to watch the HP State Olympic Games. I have always had a passion for sports and I enjoy playing kabaddi. This is also an opportunity for women and girls to show their strength by participating in large numbers. I will be cheering the loudest for them from the stands. I hope one day I can also represent my country!”

Today, the Games mascot ‘JEETU’ visited numerous schools in Hamirpur to spread the message of the HP Olympic Games. Some of the schools he visited were Him Academy Public School and Blue Star Senior Secondary School, where nearly 1200 students gathered around him for selfies, hugged him and expressed their wish to see the Games along with their parents. ‘JEETU’ will visit Gandhi Chowk in Hamirpur on 21st June to meet the local residents and shopkeepers to highlight the message of the Games which is 'Khelega Yuva, JeetegaHimachal'. The mascot has gained prominence also as its part of the endangered species list, this initiative is highlighting the importance of protecting our wildlife and preservation of the ecological surroundings.

The torch run which started in Shimla travelled to Solan, PaontaSahib, Una, Nurpur, Kangra and Dharamshala. Today, it went to Joginder Nagar and Kullu. The run will then proceed to Mandi, Bilaspur and conclude in Hamirpur.

The torch run and the State Olympics have drawn the support of some of India’s top athletes, including Olympic and Commonwealth champions. The Great Khali and the governor of Himachal Pradesh Shri. Acharya Devvrat will be inaugurating the Games on 22nd June.
