Cash prizes worth Rs. 50 lakhs and trophies awarded to over 350 outstanding players

Amritsar, April 6, 2014: At the 44th Annual Sports Prize Distribution Function  for the year 2013-14 of the Guru Nanak Dev University, over 350 outstanding players including 150 women who brought laurels to the University in various sports disciplines at the International, National and All India Inter-Varsity levels were honored here today with cash prizes worth Rs. 50 lakhs and trophies.

A.S. Brar, Vice-Chancellor presided over and Padma  S. Bahadur Singh Chouhan, eminent Olympian was the chief guest and presented prizes to the winners. H.S. Randhawa, Deputy Director, Sports and Head read out the Annual Sports Achievements Report. Gurdev Singh, Principal, Guru Nanak College, Phagwara and President, GND University Sports Committee (men) welcomed the chief guests and others. Sarita, Principal, BD Arya College, Jalandhar and Vice-President, GND University Sports Committee (women) presented vote of thanks.

P.K. Sehaj Pal, Dean, Students Welfare, Inderjit Singh, Registar, Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Head Punjab School of Economics, A.S. Sidhu, incharge Press & Public Relation and other officials of the University and coaches were also present at this occasion.

In this function, the All India Inter-University winners were honored with Rs. 12000 each, second position holder got Rs 10000 and Rs. 8000 each was awarded to third position holders.

DAV College, Amritsar lifted the Guru Nanak Dev University Inter-College 'A' Division Overall General Championship Trophy (Men) while Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar remained runners-up.

In Women Section, BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar lifted the GND University Inter-College 'A' Division Overall General Championship Trophy while HMV, Jalandhar remained runners-up.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial Overall Championship Trophy for the Year 2012-13 alongwith cash prize of Rs. 49000 went to BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar and Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar finished second.

Similarly in 'B' Division SDSPM (W) College Rayya was Winner and BD Arya (G) College Jalandhar Cantt was Runners-up in women category. In Men category in 'B' Division Khalsa Physical Education College, Heir was Winner and SSM College Dinanagar was Runners-up.

During 2013-14, the University teams both Men and Women got 10 positions in International sports event in the event of Asia Cup Cricket held at Sri Lanka, Asian Grand Prix Championship held at Thailand, Asian Grand Prix Championship held at Japan, and 309 positions in various disciplines in the All India Inter-University Competitions. 

On this occasion, the principals, HoDs of Physical Education and Sports personalities/coaches who made exceptional contribution to the University for winning MAKA Trophy were also honored.

Abhishek Verma, from the University Campus was honored with Rest. 25000 cash prize who got position in Asian Grand Prix Championship held at Thailand and Asian Archry Championship held at Italy. Similarly Sneh Rana from BBKDAV College, Amritsar was also awarded with Rs. 25000 for securing position in Asian Cup Cricket held at Sri Lanka on this occasion.
