5 DAYS VOCATIONAL TRAINING ON BEEKEEPING HELD AT KVK, LANGROYA

Ludhiana, February 17, 2017: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, SBS Nagar (Langroya) conducted a 5 day training programme on "Beekeeping" from February 13 to 17. Dr Jugraj Singh (Deputy Director) KVK Lnagroya, interacted with the trainees and highlighted the importance of beekeeping as subsidiary occupation for extra income generation along with the farming for rising the living standard. Under this training programme, training coordinator Dr. Suman Kumari, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection) imparted the knowledge regarding identification of different kinds of honey bees, importance of beekeeping, seasonal management of honey bees, protection of honey bees from the harmful pesticides, care and management of hives, migratory beekeeping and management of insect-pest and diseases of honey bees. In this context, practical demonstration of honey extraction was also performed under supervision of Dr Suman Kumari at “Beekeeping Unit” of KVK, Langroya. Participants were also trained by providing information like different types of loan schemes, subsidies and financial help by different institutes. Dr Navjot Singh, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) delivered a lecture on the importance of pollination by honey bees in fruits and vegetables. He has also discussed different types of important vegetables and fruits which are the good source of nectar and pollen for bees. Dr Tejbir Singh, Assistant Professor (Animal Sciences) delivered a lecture on the importance of integrated farming system to the trainees. On the concluding session, participants were also having an exposure visit experience regarding different practical techniques at Sr. Mohinder Singh’s beekeeping unit at SBS Nagar.
