500 PTU Volunteers to make aware villagers of health

Kapurthala, February 25, 2013: Punjab Technical University (PTU) has made a new beginning from this academic session by making a strong platform of National Service Scheme (NSS).

Under this, a Health awareness campaign will be started by the NSS department of PTU. Before starting this campaign, the NSS department of PTU has made a survey in different areas of the state to know their requirements. Based on this survey, a campaign on Cancer and Hepatitis awareness is being initiated in Jalandhar district.

According to the information provided by the Public Relations Office of the University, as per this campaign, 2000+ houses in 11 villages of Jalandhar district with a population of 15000+, has been spotted by the NSS department of the University to make them aware.

This information will be provided to the residents of villages through door to door approach.

PTU NSS programme In-charge-cum Director PIT Kapurthala, Dr Nachattar Singh, Unit spokesperson Ekomkar Singh Johal, Deputy Registrar and Unit Coordinator Dr. Jagmeet Bawa told that for this campaign, a team is constituted in which 500 volunteers from 15 different affiliated colleges of PTU are included. This campaign will start on February 26 and end on March 4.

Johal told that among the chosen villages, Mirapur, Khu-Khu, Shahpur, Barsala, Udopur, Jagral, Pratappura, Loharan are included.

Maximum population is in Loharan i.e. 2000 people whereas village with least population is Barsala with 235 people.

Dr. Jagmeet Bawa told that in the past, cases of Hepatitis were found in these villages and after survey it was found that there is lack of awareness in these villages. The NSS department of PTU has already organized awareness campaigns in different city/towns of the state, like Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda and Barnala, as per their requirement. He said that these types of campaigns will be initiated in different districts of the state in future also. 

Deputy Registrar Ekomkar Singh Johal told that CT Campus Shahpur has been associated with this campaign as team Coordination Centre (Head office), inaugural venue and as team motivation centre.

On February 26, MLA from Cantt Pargat Singh will inaugurate this campaign.

Dr. Rajneesh Arora, Vice Chancellor PTU said that every educational institute organises camps under NSS but the purpose of PTU is to organise a campaign according to the results of the survey conducted. Today, even villagers have shortage of time, so it is not possible for them also to come and contact the persons on a specific date, time and venue. PTU volunteers will approach them door to door to make them aware.
