Amity School of Engineering & Technology, Amity University Haryana organized a National Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management in its campus today. The Chief Guest of the conference was Prof.(Dr.) B.J.Alappat Professor, Environmental Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Delhi.
Undoubtedly environment and its preservation is one of the most pressing issues that the Society is facing internationally. The Prime Minister is very concerned about the deteriorating condition of the Environment and there is a definite need to spread awareness about protecting and improving the environment and preventing, controlling and abating environmental pollution. Solid waste and the resulting lichens coming out of the landfill are effecting very seriously and adversely the environment of soil, air and water. Mismanagement of solid waste is one of the prime factors. Recent tragedy of Ghazipur and Bhalswa landfill resulting in deaths and damage to the local environment.

While addressing the students Prof B J Alappat stressed upon two essential factors to be taken into account while preparing a plan for Sustainable Solid Waste Management for Delhi, the capital of the country. First is segregated waste collection right at the source of generation. Second waste destruction without causing environmental damage and not power generation.”

Finally Prof Alappat came out with proposed with Govt. support a model of ‘Mixed Waste Processing Monster’ can be created with expertise, mixed waste and safe environment as the outputs.

While addressing the students Prof P B Sharma, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Haryana said, “India must focus on local needs, and we require special needs for research and innovation. Environmental Science and Waste management should be on top of the agenda as far as the choice of the students discipline are concern at UG & PG level. ”

Maj Gen V K Narang (Retd), Director, ASET highlighted the issues such as climate change, air water and soil pollution due to mismanagement of Solid Waste in the country affecting the health of common man.

For the first time in a national conference of Sustainable Solid Waste Management, A senior Professor from Amity School of Communication carried out the survey of the impact of pollution created by Landfill at Bandhwari, Gurugram on the simple honest villagers staying around the landfill. Prof Mehta who presented the paper as a resource person said, “It was an eye opening experience for me to watch this simple and innocent senior citizens of the villages surround the landfill, in one voice complaining the headache, sleeplessness & anger as common and continuing problem with their day to day life.”

“A woman of manger village complaint that there was no hospital nearby where they can meet and discuss women related problems with some specialist”, Prof Mehta added.

Prof Padmakali Banerjee, Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. R K Malik, Maj Gen P K Sharma (Retd), Dr Preeti Singh, Dr. Shalini, Dr A K Raghav, Ankit, Lalit Yadav, Faculty, Staff and students were present at the occasion.
