Biodiversity Day celebrations at Panjab University

CHANDIGARH, MAY 26, 2017: As a part of the celebration for International Biological Diversity, The Centre for Industry Institute Partnership Programme (CIIPP), Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Punjab Biodiversity Board under the aegis of National Biodiversity Authority of India celebrated Biodiversity Day today. This event at Panjab University was jointly conducted by the Department of Environment studies and Department of Botany at Botany Department Auditorium. Dr.Madhuri Rishi, Chairperson, Department of Environment Studies welcomed the esteemed dignitaries and shared the theme of the event “Biodiversity and the sustainable tourism. The event was inaugurated by Prof OP Katare, Dean Research Promotion Cell.
Speaking on the occasion he elaborated the programme in detail relating human values and biodiversity with his influential and motivational words. Prof R. K. Tuli Former Director NABI and research advisor UIET, was Guest of honour. The key note address was delivered by Prof. Daizy Batish from Department of Botany, PU Chandigarh.
Dr.Batish elaborated on the Principles and way to save the rich flora and fauna of India and explained the biodiversity from pole to equator and highlighted the consequences of biodiversity loss in a very simple yet impactful manner. On the occasion, Mr. Gurharminder Singh, Senior Scientific Officer, Punjab Biodiversity Board (PBB) briefed the audience about the activities of Punjab Biodiversity Board and cited a case study of a village in Fatehgarh Sahib district. He shared with the audience Kaya Kalp Programme in which how the intervention of PBB was instrumental in saving a Banyan tree and covering the area into a heritage site. A plantation drive along with the display of rich diversity around Chandigarh captured by Natural Diversity Agency was showcased.
