British delegation from Nottingham City Council, UK and UoN visits PU

Chandigarh, November 24 ,2014 : British Delegation from Nottingham City Council, UK and University of Nottingham (UoN) today visited Panjab University (PU) and other Chandigarh Region Innovation Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) institutions.

The British delegation visited UIPS, Bio Chemistry, Bio-Physics, Bio-Technology and Microbiology Departments of PU, IMTECH, PGI, PEC, IISER Mohali today and interacted with the faculty members and researchers. Later today, the delegation also visited Infosys at the IT Park, Chandigarh.

The two sides intends to foster alliances and joint research proposals. The purpose is to make preparation for holding joint seminar in February 2015 at Chandigarh to explore the possibility of specific research proposals. The larger delegation from Nottingham would visit Chandigarh, which would bring together Life Sciences and Medical Sciences faculty from UoN and CRIKC institutions on a common platform.

PU & UoN intends to work together to apply joint projects and proposals under the recently-constituted ‘Newton Bhabha fund’ for the researchers. The Newton-Bhabha Fund is of GBP 150 Million. The two sides intend to use the prestigious programme for the benefit of their students and researchers. The fund will have a strong interdisciplinary dimension that will further strategise the science, research and innovation cooperation between India and the UK.

Apart from it, Newton-Bhabha PhD placements Programme will sponsor UK and Indian PhD students to spend a period of their study of about three to six months in Indian and UK higher Education institutions between March 2015 to March 2016. The programme will cover the costs like in-country costs including accommodation and stipend for PhD students,

Visa Fees, Economy class air travel, and overseas travel insurance incurred by PhD students.

“We want to encourage industry-academia links on the lines of Nottingham. In the focus should be areas like pharmacy, energy, aerospace and psychology that are the strengths of our region,” said visiting delegation member Prof(Honrary) Hardev Singh.

Last night, British Delegation met UT Advisor KK Sharma, PU Vice Chancellor, Prof Arun Kumar Grover, UT Finance Secretary, Sarvjit Singh, UT Director Higher Education, Sandeep Hans.

British delegation included Chief Executive Nottingham City Council (NCC),  David Bishop, Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission, Chandigarh Mr. David Lelliott, Prof Hardev Singh, Cllr Nick McDonald, Sam Hopwell, Paragon Law, Thalej Vasishta, Country Advisor of UoN, Varrtika Tarun Mudaliar.

In the meeting, the two sides discussed and deliberated the issues of common concern and measures for increasing mutual assistance and support between the Chandigarh and Nottingham cities.

For the last five months, UoN, PU and CRIKC institutions are in constant touch with each other for having academic collaboration between the two sides. Process for identification of research proposals of researchers and students from both the sides is on advanced stage.

Nottingham delegation had earlier visited PU in June this year. On their invitation, Chandigarh delegation had also visited UoN and Nottingham City.
