Patiala, February 1, 2017: Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder has assured the state’s Cooperative Labour & Construction Societies that he would look into their demands and would also re-start paper tendering system once Congress government comes to power.

The assurance was made during a meeting with a delegation, which apprised Captain Amarinder of the problems being faced by them due to the e-tendering system.

The delegation members informed Captain Amarinder that there are 1762 registered Co-Operative Labour and Construction Societies in Punjab, of which 70 per cent fall in the rural areas. With majority of the society members not literate and no provisions of internet/cyber cafe in the rural areas, they complained that they usually get to know about the tenders after the deadline for the same has expired.

The society members pointed out that because of the e-tendering system, those in the villages were losing their source of income. They also alleged that in the last ten years, just to extend undue benefits to some select contractors, the Drainage and Irrigation Department had imposed unwarranted conditions because of which the Co-Operative Labour & Construction Societies were not able to get the cleaning and repair work of the drains and canals done.

Captain Amarinder assured the societies’ members that their demands would be looked into.
