Ludhiana, January 23, 2013: A 24 year old pregnant patient was admitted in Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana under Dr. Suman Puri, Senior Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with an alarming low heart rate of the fetus.  She was investigated and diagnosed as pregnancy with Lupus (SLE) and the fetus had a congenital heart block which kept the heart rate very low.  She was put on  medication and carefully monitored throughout the pregnancy.  She delivered at eight and half months of pregnancy by a caesarean section on December 7 last and a live female baby weighing 2 Kg was born.

According to Dr. Suman Puri, the mother had no complications and the baby although healthy had a slow heart rate.  The baby was kept in the neonatal intensive care unit under the care of Dr. Puneet Pooni, Professor of Paediatircs.

As the baby had complete heart block, a temporary pacemaker was given in the one day old infant by Dr. Bishav Mohan at Hero DMC Heart Institute.  The permanent pacemaker was placed by Dr. Rajiv Kumar Gupta two days later.  Both the mother and child are doing fine.
