Ludhiana, September 3, 2013: Ashok Juneja, Chairman and Inderjit Singh Sohal, President in general house meeting of Punjab Plywood Manufacturers Association held today said according to Punjab Industrial Policy 2009, the Plywood Industry is agro based.

They added Industry and Commerce Department has already written on May 16 this year to Managing Director Punjab Agro Industries Corporation and Financial Commissioner (Punjab) for declaring the said Industry as agro-based immediately.

They said the Punjab Chief Minister in a meeting of Industrialists held on January 11 this year said that plywood industry should be declared agro-based. Department of Industries and Commerce has already written to Financial Commissioner Development (Punjab) the competent authorities in this regard to declare it as agro-based but notification is still awaited despite passing of about three months.

They said the Punjab CM had also decided that farmers will be at liberty to sell their agro forestry produce directly to the wood based industries / saw mills or in the proposed new Mandis. No permission will be required from Mandi Board for direct sale / purchase raised by farmers in the state. The chief minister had also declared that interest subsidy to agro based industry will also be considered. Both Sohal and Juneja demanded that fixed capital investment for grant of 5 % back ended interest subsidy be granted by Punjab Agro Industry Corp Ltd on investment upto Rs. 2 crores in place of 10 crores. It should be granted on all kinds of advances granted to agro based units.

They demanded that the Centre should exempt plywood from Excise Duty since agro based units are contributing much for uplifting the progress of farmers and industry.

Further, they said Punjab Plywood Industry has increased its sale price 10% due to decrease in value of Indian rupee (INR) imports are becoming costlier. As such import value of face veneer, Formaline, Phenile and other raw materials and chemicals used by the plywood units have become much costlier thereby causing increase in plywood cost.
