Ludhiana, April 24, 2015: The experts of Department of Extension Education of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) stressed the need for cultivating recommended paddy varieties in order to lessen the incidence of insect-pests and diseases. During the ongoing campaign on “Cultivate recommended varieties of paddy,” Dr R. K. Kalra, Head of the Department said the short duration recommended varieties help to save precious water recourses. The newly released variety of paddy ‘PR-124’ takes 135 days to mature and yields 30.5q/acre, she said. The campaign was undertaken in various villages of Sidhwan belt and Jagraon block of Ludhiana district through posters, discussions with farmers and with the use of public address system. The scientists namely Dr. J.S. Bhalla, Dr. Dharminder Singh, Dr.Vipan Rampal, Dr. Pankaj Kumar and Dr. Lavleesh Garg discouraged the cultivation of unrecommended long duration paddy varieties, especially, Pusa-44. They covered the villages including Humbran, Bhoondri, Purain, Sidhwan, Gorsian Makhan, Bharowal, Swaddi kalan, Sheikh Daulat, Galib Khurd, Leelan, Nanaksar Gurusar, Kaonke, Dehrka, Manuke and Sudhar.
