Election commission amends instructions regarding moving officers indirectly connected with elections

Chandigarh, February 25, 2014: The Election Commission of India today issued ammendments to instructions dated 9th January, 2014 under which it was mentioned that "no officer connected with elections, directly or indirectly should be allowed to continue in the present district of posting".
According to a spokesman of Chief Electoral Officer, the Election Commission of India received representations from various state governments regarding difficulty being faced by them in implementing the directions in so far as the officers indirectly connected with elections were concerned as this would involve transfer of large number of officers. The spokesman said that Election Commission of India taking into account the views expressed by state government decided to amend the said clause as "no officer connected directly with election should be allowed to continue in the present district of posting". The spokesman clarified that however if prima facie any complaint is received with regard to officials who are indirectly connected with elections, commission shall take appropriate action against such officials.
The Spokesman clarified that officers appointed as Sector Officers, though directly involved in election duties will not be covered under these instructions as their duties are such that they are deployed in field duties where their knowledge of the area/terrain is crucial to their effective performances and therefore they will continue to be deployed in the present area/terrain.
