Expert Lecture On Solid Waste Management

Ludhiana, June 14, 2017: The Institution of Engineers (India) Ludhiana Local centre organized an expert lecture on Solid waste Management at Science & Technology Entrepreneur’s Park, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana today.
The Chief Guest of the occasion was Dr.M.S Saini, Director, GNDEC, Ludhiana. Er.N.S.Grewal, Executive Director, STEP graced the occasion as Guest of Honor. The expert lecture was delivered by Er.Harbir Singh, Punjab Pollution Control Board, Ludhiana.
Welcoming the guests, Er.Gurpreet Singh Walia, Honorary Secretary emphasized upon the relevance of the topic in present day scenario.
In his lecture, Er.Harbir Singh said that Solid waste to the tune of 20lac tons was being produced in Ludhiana city daily. Segregation of waste was of prime importance. Three different colored bins must be used and waste be segregated at source. He also emphasized that PPCB was a regulatory body and needed the help of youth to manage this problem. He also outlined the policies of PPCB for reduction of solid waste. Regarding use of plastics, he said black colored plastic bags were made of recycled plastic and were harmful for human beings. He also outlined the steps being taken by PPCB as to setting up of 3 nos.CETPs, green bridges on Budha nallah and segregation of waste.
In his address, Brig. Mastinder Singh said 3Rs: Reduce, Recycle and Reuse needed to be the mantra for the day.
The Chief guest Dr.M.S.Saini said that waste management required the combined efforts of the regulatory body with citizens to be effective.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Er.Arvind Dhingra thanked the guests and students of STEP for attending the expert lecture.
