Ludhiana, November 17, 2014: Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal’s state president Amrit Lal Jain, general secretary Sunil Mehra and secretary Mahinder Aggarwal have said although the Centre proposed to implement GST in the year 2016 yet neither the Centre not the state government has taken an initiative to hold a meeting with traders to get their point of view on the matter.
Speaking to the media persons here today, they sought that immediate steps be taken for the implementation of GST as it had already been delayed by six years. They said the kelkar Committee had stated that GST should be 14 per cent with the Centre’s and the State’s share as 6 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively.  Whereas Finance Committee had opined that GST should be 12 per cent with the Centre’s and the State’s share as 5 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively. They added on the other hand a Standing Sub Committee constituted for the purpose had opined that GST should be 27 per cent with the Centre’s and the State’s share as around 13 per cent and around 14 per cent, respectively.
They further told that globally GST was fixed at 16.4 per cent. A few countries have GST as under: Japan (5 per cent), Singapore (7 per cent), Australia (10 per cent), Germany (19 per cent), France (19.6 per cent), Sweden (25 per cent), Canada (5 per cent), New Zealand (15 per cent) and Egypt 10 (per cent). They said in case GST was fixed at 27 per cent in India then it would be a failure. They said they demanded that GST be fixed as per recommendations of the Kelkar Committee.
Further, they said a few states were demanding that petroleum, liquor and tobacco products should not be included in GST and these should be left with States. A few States also demand that enter tax should also be continued with them. They said they did not agree to these demands as these were against the spirit of GST.
