Jalandhar, February 23, 2013: Irked by the bad condition on the National Highway covering a length of over 287 km from Panipat to Amritsar, the very six-laning project undertaken by the NHAI, the one initial cost was estimated at Rs 2,700 crore, it seems the estimate now cross to the tune of Rs 4,500 crore due to cost excalation, if the speed of the construction work goes like snail.

City Mayor Sunil Jyoti on Friday paid visit to 20 km stretch in Jalandhar area alongwith the hired engineers of the Soma Enterprises to show the day- to -day problems of the commuters due to the pot holes, dilapidated roads, worn-out service lanes at Rama Mandi Chowk, few points where water-logging in the lanes where there is no disposal of rainwater harvesting channels.

On the other hand the rampant encroachments under the bridges. There should have been green belts along the highway would have been developed. With a heavy heart the Mayor said that the commuters are paying heavy toll charges, in the light of heavy toll charges levied, no smooth passage had been provided to the vehicle owners, which is a matter of great concern.

Next comes Pragpur problem, Jyoti was interested in solving the matter between officials of O&M who wanted sewage connection to be connected to the  main disposal from underneath the bridge but the Soma Engineers pointed out that they would not allow the sewage channel to be laid under the bridge because it was just violation of the norms.

On the spot the officials of the Sewage Board were asked to present the proposal within two days, to sort out the issue.

Sunil Jyoti also inspected the Chuggitti lanes and asked the officials to ensure the service lane's angle to be improved for smooth moving of the vehicular traffic. It was agreed by the Soma engineers to get the service lanes widened.

As regards the green belt to be developed under Lamma Pind bridge, the Mayor issued instructions to the officials  to get the work related to the greenbelts be started and also Pathankot bypass bridge soonest.
