Ludhiana, May 27, 2017: A morbidly obese patient of weight 130kg and height 5ft4inch was being evaluated for bariatric surgery(weight reducing surgery) in Hisar, Haryana, when he was found to have cancer in his right kidney. After that he immediately came to Dr Aulakh for treatment. His CT scan showed a cancer of size 13cm in his right kidney. Other investigations were done and tumour was found to be localised in his kidney. In view of morbid obesity, to remove this cancer with open surgery would be a difficult task but Dr Aulakh took decision to remove it laparoscopicaly. Three tiny holes were made for camera and intruments and diseased kidney was removed throughtiny hole. Patient recovered well after surgery and was discharged on 4th postop day. If it would have been done through traditional method, pt would have a long incision, painful postop and longer hospital stay. Patient is perfectly fine now and can undergo bariatric surgery after some interval. Dr Aulakh is doing most of the kidney surgeries laparoscopicaly including donor nephrectomy which is done during transplant.

In modern era obesity is emerging as major health care problem. Along with other cancers it is also a proven risk factor for kidney cancer. According to Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh, Professor of Urology and Transplant unit Head, DMC&H Ludhiana, obesity increases the risk of kidney cancer to two times. He explained that patient having BMI more than 30 are at greater risk. But a relief to these patients that with modern laparoscopic surgery techniques it is quite safe to perform minimal invasive surgery in these patients..So no need of long painful incisions and long recovery time in hospital.
Dr aulakh added that by regular exercise and healthy diet this risk can be reduced.
