Ludhiana, April 27, 2017: G.H.G Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar District Ludhiana, well-known as “A Wonder in Rural setting”, organised its Annual Prize-Giving Function in Nihang Shamsher Singh Hall today. Lieutenant General S.Surinder Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, presided at the function. He was accompanied by his better half Mrs.Sukhwant Kaur, his father-in-law S.Ranjit Singh and his brother-in-law S.Jagwant Singh. Some high army and police officers also attended the function. The Chief Guest was received with a Guard-of-Honour by the Cadets of College NCC Units of 3- Punjab Battalion (Boys and Girls) and was given a cordial welcome by S. Manjit Singh Gill, President, Governing Council, GHG Khalsa Institutions, Secretary Dr. S. S. Thind, the members and the office bearers of the Governing Council, Principal Dr. Swarnjeet Singh Deol, College Registrar Dr. H.S. Brar and by various other distinguished persons.
The Function began with Shabad Gayan, “Deh Siva“, after which Principal Dr. Swarnjeet Singh Deol warmly welcomed all the distinguished guests and the students present in the hall, and presented the annual report of the college, highlighting its glorious achievements in academics, sports, and cultural and co-curricular activities. Among the prize winners, 34 College toppers were given academic prizes for securing First Positions in the college in Panjab University Examinations held during the session. Particular to mention are Panjab University toppers Amanjot Kaur and Ramandeep Kaur who were awarded prizes for securing University Gold Medals in M.Sc. Physics and M.Sc. Chemistry respectively.
In addition, 77 distinguished sportspersons were awarded for their glorious achievements in University, State, National and International level events and Competitions. The names of the prominent International players and athletes who received prizes and medals include Anjali Bashishth and Nazis Mansoori (Canoeing), Mukesh Choudhary and Abhishek Jamwal (Wushu), Aman and Anayat Sidhu (Archery), Rajiv Malik (Shooting), Arjunveer Singh (Chess), and Ravinder Singh and Manvir Singh (Football). Many other players and athletes who had excelled at the University and the Inter-University level events also received prizes from the Chief Guest, while Mrs. Sukhwant Kaur, accompanied by Mrs. Hareena Gill, honoured the college Football Team (Women), which has won P.U Championship for 17th time in a row.
Mukul Kumar and Kamaldeep Kaur got prizes for Best Athlete (Men) and Best Athlete (Women) respectively. Abhishek Jamwal of B. P. Ed. got Trophy for “The Best Sportsperson of the Year”, while “The Student of the Year Trophy” for the session 2016-17 went to Devanshu Chakraborty of B.Sc. III. A distinguished student and an International Archery Player Anayat Sidhu of (10 + 2) received Trophy for “The Best Student” of Khalsa Collegiate Public Senior Secondary School. Sports coaches and teacher were also honoured by the Chief Guest.
Lieutenant General S. Surinder Singh in his speech congratulated the students for their excellent achievements in their respective fields. He also encouraged and gave a success mantra to the cream of the college by saying that there is no substitute for hard work. He advised and motivated the young generation to develop a scientific temper and positive attitude and to remain in high spirits to face the challenges of life. He also expressed belief in the common saying, “Honour the able person and see the miracle of enhanced efficiency” and said that the students, when encouraged and rewarded for their achievements in various fields, show a very positive effect. He also urged upon the state governments to promote research, designing and innovation without which no nation can progress. The Chief Guest was greatly impressed by the sprawling, lush-green and magnificent college campus. He applauded and appreciated the efforts of the college Governing Council in providing the ultra-modern facilities for the students. Mr. Manjit Singh Gill, the President, College Governing Council, presented a memento and a robe of honour to the Chief Guest while Mrs. Hareena Gill, wife of S. Manjit Singh Gill, honoured Mrs. Sukhwant Kaur. Also present on the occasion were Principal Dr.Satwinder Kaur, Principal Dr Sarbjeet Kaur, Principal Dr. Harbans Singh, Hockey Olympian Col. Jaswant Singh and many other dignitaries. A brief but impressive cultural programme in the forms of Bhangra and Geet Gayan was presented in the end. The function concluded with the National Anthem “Jan Gan Man”.
