Mahindra NBA Challenge League: APJ, Gurdaspur advance to semis

Ludhiana, August 25, 2012: APJ Jalandhar and Gurdaspur stormed into the semifinals of the under-16 girls division as the knockout stages of the Mahindra NBA Challenge got underway at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

APJ Jalandhar faced a tough quarterfinal test against group B winners PAU Model School but dealt with it brilliantly as Tanvi’s 17 points spurred them on to a 35-17 victory. They were joined by group A toppers Gurdaspur who overpowered Sangrur 54-26.

The quarterfinal stage of the under-13 girls division also tipped off with PAU Model School enjoying better fortune than their seniors as they advanced to the semis with a resounding 45-11 win. Chahat top-scored with 14 points.

In a low-scoring thriller on court number 2, Faridkot suffered an agonising one-point defeat at the hands of Moga who prevailed 14-13 to keep their title dreams intact. Mansa sealed the third semifinal berth as they overcame Gymkhana Club 21-12.

The first-half of the day also saw plenty of action in the senior women’s division. Government College, Ludhiana kept the locals’  spirits up on another rain marred day, beating Kapurthala 50-37 with Kiran netting 20points. The individual effort of the day truly belonged to Chetna of S.R. Government College, Amritsar who went on a shooting spree to amass 34 points against Sangrur. Unfortunately for her, it ended in a losing cause with Sangrur winning the game 58-41.
