Ludhiana, December 6, 2016: Nearly 200 Patients attended the Cleft Lip and Palate awareness sessions organised at Civil Hospital by Smile Train and Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as a part of weeklong awareness campaign. Dr Kulvinder Singh , Senior Medical Officer presided over the inter active session. He asked the Medical Officers and health staff to start a special campaign to identify such cases and refer these for the surgical treatment which is totally free of cost.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Sanjeev Uppal , Lead Surgeon of Smile Train Project and HOD Plastic Surgery DMC & H , told the people that Cleft Lip and Palate are fully curable by a series of surgical operations done at the age of 3 months and 1 year . Another operation , if required for reshaping the nose can be undertaken at the age of 14 – 16 years he added. The parents should be reassured by the doctors attending on the neonates . He explained the special feeding techniques in case of the children born with cleft palate , who are unable to suck the breast feed.

Dr Manisha , Doctor Incharge of the Early Detection of Congenital Diseases Centre at Civil Hospital told the gathering that if the surgical treatment of cleft palate is undertaken before the age of 15 months then there are very less chances of child developing a defective speech and will learn to speak clear words and sentences.

Addressing the gathering ,Dr Bharti Tanwar , surgical specialist of civil hospital said that the pregnant ladies should consult a doctor before taking any medicine or getting an x ray done so that there are no chances of developing congenital defects. Dr Sherrin Shah , Assistant Professor Plastic Surgery at DMCH suggested to the pregnant ladies that smoking is injurious to the foetus and if pregnant ladies are sitting near to a smoker , there are chances of developing defects like cleft lip and palate.

Promotional material was distributed amongst the gathering to propagate the message to masses.
