Chandigarh, February 14, 2013: Surinder Pal Singh Oberoi who had played a major role in bringing back 17 Indian youth on death row in Sharjah, must be honoured with Padam Shri Award by Indian Government.

Demanding this, Chairman Punjabi Cultural Council Jaswant Singh Chapa and Chairman International Sikh Martial Arts Academy Harjeet Singh Grewal State Awardee in a joint statement issued today urged the government of India that outstanding efforts of Oberoi deserves that he should be awarded with Padam Shri as he had fought a long legal struggle to get free about 54 Indians languished in various jails of Sharjah and Dubai and to bring back 17 Indians from gallows to join their families in India.

They also asked the Punjab Government to honour Oberoi with Punjab Ratan award for bringing back the Punjabi Youth from the Jails of Sharajh as he had spent cores of rupees from his own pocket to pay the blood-money.

They added that Oberoi was also promoting our mother tongue Punjabi, Gurbani Sangeet, traditional sports, blood donations camps through social organisation ”Sarbat Da Bhalaa” in Dubai besides, donating number of social organisations, educational institutions, charitable hospitals, schools for mentally retarded children.

They also urged that SGPC and Shi Akal Takhat Sahib should also confer honour to Oberoi with “Fakhar-e-Kaum” award who had earned glory for the country across the globe.
