PADDY PROCUREMENT: Punjab sets new target of 135 lakh MT

Chandigarh, November 19, 2012:The Punjab Government today clocked the record arrival of Paddy in the 1770 procurement centres as crossed the target of 130 lac MT, setting a  new benchmark in the Paddy production in the state, despite highest ever 42% deficient rains this year. The state government Mandis today recorded 13001669 tonnes of Paddy against 11820192 tonnes of Paddy procured on this day last year. The Paddy procurement till date was 11 lacs MT tonnes more than the total Paddy procurement of last year.

According to an official spokesman, the state government seeing the consistent arrival of more than 1 lac tonnes paddy everyday has set a new target of 135 lac tonnes for current Kharif season and expects to cross it easily. The spokesman said that the state government was committed to procure every single grain of Paddy being brought by farmers to the Mandis and make payment to them within 48 hours.

He said that till date this year the payment of Rs.15031.47 crore was credited to the accounts of farmers for the purchase of paddy. He said that district Ludhiana stood first with the procurement of 1543017 tons of paddy. He said that the farmers of this district had been made payment of Rs.1834.25 crore.

The spokesman further said that with 1493555 tons paddy procurement, district Sangrur bagged second position. The Punjab Government has made Rs.1802.88 crore payment to the farmers of Sangrur district and patiala bagged third position with 1215246 tons of paddy procurement. The Punjab Government has made Rs.1455.69 crore payment to the farmers of Patiala district.

He further said that the main procurement agency of Punjab Government Pungrain purchased 29.9 percent (3653557 tons) share of the total procurement of paddy and stood first this year. Procurement agency Punsup purchased 22.9 percent (2835128 tons) share of the total procurement of paddy and procurement agency Markfed bagged third position and procured 22.9 percent (2813670 tons) of total paddy.
