Ludhiana, October 31, 2014: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) gave a warm send off to its two officials namely Dr Ramesh Kumar, Professor of Floriculture –cum- officiating Comptroller, PAU and Dr P.S. Chahal, Associate Director of Research, PAU. All the officers of the University were present on the occasion.

Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU lauded the meritorious services of Dr Kumar in the field of floriculture. “During his long span of 35 years, Dr Kumar has been instrumental in the development of various flower varieties, production technologies and post-harvest handling technologies,” he said. Further, Dr Dhillon acknowledged Dr Chahal’s 36 years of commendable service to the agricultural research. He said “Starting his career as Receptionist at Kairon Kisan Ghar, PAU in 1978 and then having a strong determination to study further and pursue Ph.D later in 2002 speaks volumes of Dr Chahal’s dedication and devotion.” He wished both the officers a healthy and wealthy post-retirement life.

Dr R.S. Sidhu, officiating Registrar and Director of Extension Education, PAU said that Dr Kumar and Dr Chahal have been very supportive and cooperative throughout their career.

Dr Kumar and Dr Chahal expressed their gratitude to the PAU VC and officers of the University for recognizing their contributions, and for being compassionate at every step.

Dr Kumar joined University services in 1979 and was elevated to the position of Head, Department of Floriculture and Landscaping in 2002; Director, Directorate of Floricultural Research, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in 2010; and officiating Comptroller and Director of Research, PAU in 2014. He has made significant contribution in the release of 16 chrysanthemum, four gladiolus and two pansy varieties. In addition, he has played a key role in the development of six production technologies and three post-harvest handling technologies. Dr Kumar is a recipient of Shri Hans Raj Pahwa Award, The Horticultural Society of India Gold Medal in Floriculture, and Life Time Achievement Award by High-Tech Horticultural Society.

A PAU alumnus, Dr Chahal became Assistant Professor (Agronomy) at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ferozepur in 1992 and later was elevated to the position of Assistant Director of Research in 1996, Deputy Director of Research in 2002 and Associate Director of Research in 2010. As a student at PAU, he was a Gold Medalist and Merit Scholarship holder in B.Sc Agriculture and M.Sc programme, respectively. During his service in the University, he has been associated with the preparation of project proposals for submission to various funding agencies like State Government Plan Schemes, ICAR, National Horticulture Mission, etc. He has also conducted trials of Agronomy and imparted training to farmers. Besides, Dr Chahal has worked as Executive Editor of Journal of Research. He has been awarded ‘Desh Sewa Rattan Award 2008’ by Shaheed Memorial Sewa Society.

Dr Kumar and Dr Chahal expressed their gratitude to the PAU VC and officers of the University for recognising their contributions, and for being compassionate at every step.
