Ludhiana, September 4, 2016: Fed up with the attitude of all the political parties and the state governments, city-based noted educationists Prof Karambir Sodhi has announced to contest as an Independent candidate for Punjab assembly elections from Ludhiana West constituency.
An announcement to this effect has been made publicly by Prof Sodhi through leaflets distributed across the city on Sunday. The leaflets read “Declares his candidature as an Independent candidate for Punjab Assembly Elections from Ludhiana West due in Feb.2017 with a commitment to struggle for (if elected)
• Creation of separate Ministry to address the issues of students & teachers.
• Pensionary benefits to all Non Govt. School/College Teachers.
• Abrogation of Atrocious Pensionary Benefits Repeal Act of 2012 & Revival of Pensionary Benefits Act of 1999.

• Concessional Educational Tours.
• Free Text books/stationary items & School Uniforms for SC/BC Students.
• Revision of posts in schools/colleges from time to time.
• Regular Guru/Shish Darshan by Representatives of Govt.”
The announcement has been made a day before the Teachers’ Day (September 5, 2016). Prof Sodhi has made an appeal to the teachers community in the leaflet, stating “A call for all Teachers (Govt./Non-Govt., KG to PG) to unite and trounce Anti-Teacher Forces”.
The leaflets’ message begins with “Happy Teachers’ Day”, further writing that “Teachers are the real builders of Nation”. He has got published the photographs of Dr S. Radha Krishnan, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Dr Abdul Kalam and Dr B R Ambedkar on the leaflets mentioning “Being inspired by Nation’s Great Visionary & Luminaries”.
Prof Sodhi is a veteran of college teachers’ movement in Punjab, a well known English and Punjabi writer, vice president of Punjab Academicians’ Forum, President of Ludhiana Writers’ Forum, Life Member of Indian Association of English Studies, Life Member of All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations, progressive Thinker committed to the Principles of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, and many more.
When contacted on Sunday, Prof Sodhi confirmed the development. He told to City Air News that the political parties and the governments were not watching the interests of the teachers’ community, therefore, he had decided to contest as an Independent candidate from Ludhiana West constituency to fight for the cause of the teachers community.
Replying to a question, he told that he had decided to contest from Ludhiana West constituency because it had maximum numbers of educational institutions, including 15 colleges and 30 schools, as compared to other assembly constituencies in Ludhiana district. As such, this constituency had maximum numbers of teachers and students in this particular assembly constituency, he said, adding that he considered this assembly constituency as the “elite one”.
He regretted that neither the state governments nor the political parties or its representatives ever tried to work for the cause of the teachers’ community. One of the major issue was that teachers were deprived of pensions in Punjab whereas 20 other states, including the neighbouring state of Haryana, were providing this facility to the retired teachers. He said that adhoc teachers were being exploited as lot but no concrete steps were being taken to check this exploitation.
