Chandigarh, March 8, 2015: On behalf of Academic Staff College (ASC), Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, PU Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy organised the Refresher Course on ‘Human Rights and Gender Studies’. A number of participants from various states like Tamil Nadu, Assam, Orissa, Haryana and Punjab attended the refresher course.
Prof. Nistha Jaiswal from Department of Law was the Chief Guest. In her inaugural address, Prof Jaiswal said the Constitution has a lot of provisions for the protection of human rights. In spite of all provisions, the need is for the effective
implementation of all the rights and the task would be possible with the cooperation from the dedicated members of the society, she added. She also mentioned the importance of the role of Judiciary. Judiciary is once the wings of the states and it has got constitutional mandate to infuse a new life in Article 21 that guarantees Right to Life and personal liberty so as to make it fruitful and meaningful for all.
Prof Nishtha said that the Government of India needs to adopt and promote a gender equality approach based on principles of substantive equality. She covered all the aspects of human rights, women rights and empowerment. She also spoke on issues of Dignity of Man, Children Rights, Right to Privacy.
