PUNJAB approves construction of labour sheds at district and sub divisional levels

Chandigarh, July 14, 2013: The Punjab government has approved the construction of labour sheds at district and sub division level to provide basic facilities to labourers.

Disclosing this here today, Surjit Kumar Jayani, Labour Welfare Minister, Punjab said that labour sheds would be constructed at district and sub division level across the state with the cost of Rs 10 crore.

He said that the maps of labour sheds have already been passed and Municipal Committees would provide land for construction of Sheds at district and sub divisional level. He added that the department of labour welfare would provide money to Municipal Committees to construct these Sheds.

Minister said that sitting arrangements, drinking water and washrooms facilities would be provided at the Sheds. He said that the department has decided to give walls of the Sheds to advertising agencies to display their boards or flex boards and the money collected from this would be spent on maintenance of the sheds. ‘Welfare schemes run by the labour department would also be displayed on the walls of the sheds’, the minister added.

He further said that in the lack of proper place for labourers who seeking work, they have to face problems in the rainy season and summers. Now With the construction of labour Sheds they could easily sit there for seeking work and common man easily find labourers from proper place.

Minister further said that the Punjab government is committed to labourers welfare. Keeping in view recently the state government has been increase the scholarship and Shagun scheme amount of registered labourers with Punjab building and other construction workers welfare board.
