CHANDIGARH, DECEMBER 30, 2016: Punjab Governor and Administrator UT Chandigarh Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore made a surprise visit to the temporary Night Shelters set up by the Social Welfare Department Chandigarh late last night to take stock of the general upkeep of these shelters.
Accompanied by senior officers of Chandigarh Administration, Sh. Badnore, asked the administration to ensure proper facilities in these night shelters. He said that keeping in view the continued cold wave in the region, there was a need to provide all the basic items to provide respite from extreme cold in these Rain Baseras. He emphasized on the need of involving Chandigarh Police especially the Beat Constables for smooth functioning of these night shelters.
The Social Welfare Department has set up 10 Night Shelters at different locations /places in UT Chandigarh such as PGIMER-12, GMCH-32, GMSH-16, ISBT-43, Sectors 22/20/29/19/9. These shelters were set up on 21st December, 2016 and would remain functional till 28th February, 2017.
Raen Baseras provide free of cost shelter to the homeless people. In all such shelters, complete bedding (Quilts with Woolen Cover, Mattress/ Talai, Bed Sheets, Pillow with cover, Blankets), Water facility, Medical Facility, 24 hours Security Guards, Lighting etc. are provided free of cost.
On the directions of the Governor, the Social Welfare Department has constituted teams for making the visits at all the Night Shelters with a view to motivate the people sleeping openly to take shelter in the Raen Baseras. Some more shelters are likely to be set up on receipt of demand from the teams.
