Ludhiana, November 5, 2015: In a major breakthrough, doctors of Fortis Hospital Ludhiana, led by Dr.Nitin Behl (Head of Department of Gastroenterology) saved the life of a 44 year old female patient by doing endoscopic therapy/procedure for a life threatening rupture of food pipe (esophagus).
The 44 year old female got admitted at Fortis Hospital Ludhiana, with multiple episodes of blood in vomiting, pain in chest and low BP.
She was shifted to the ICU where after initial stabilization, endoscopy was performed. She had full thickness tear (rupture) of food pipe and extensive bleeding from that site.  Her poor general condition and high risk of mortality made surgery difficult. She was taken for endoscopic procedure where this rupture of food pipe was closed with a special endoscopic clip device. Post procedure she recovered and her BP improved and was able to take oral diet over the next 5 days.
Giving details of the procedure, Dr.Nitin Behl said that this patient if not done endoscopcially would have required a major surgery, which had 50% mortality risk.  Considering technical difficulty of this procedure, special clip closure device was used and the rupture / leak was closed successfully. She survived from this life threatening condition and is discharged in good condition from the hospital
Patient thanked the hospital authorities for saving her life. Mr. Vivan Singh Gill, Director, Fortis Hospital said that this is a latest advancement in field of endoscopy and performed for the first time in this region. Fortis Hospital Ludhiana is committed to providing state-of-the-art services for the well being of the patients from this region. Fortis Hospital Ludhiana’s Gastroenterology department has been specially equipped with the latest endoscopic equipment for performance of such complex procedures.
