SCIENTIFIC SESSION: National Conference on Hypertension begins

Ludhiana, October 20, 2012: Two-day “21st National Conference of Hypertension Society of India” being organised jointly by Hero DMC Heart Institute and Hypertension Society of India began at Aveda Hotel in Ludhiana today.

The two-day conference will include comprehensive scientific sessions on various aspects of hypertension and its associated problems by distinguished faculty from various parts of the country.

Chief Cardiologist-Dr GS Wander, who is also the chairperson of the conference, extended warm welcome to the dignitaries and the participating delegates.Eminent speakers from India & abroad graced the conference. It was attended by more than 500 delegates.

The scientific session began with “Dr Siddharth N. Shah Epidemiological Oration” by Dr Rajesh Kumar from PGIMER, Chandigarh. In his lecture, Dr Rajesh Kumar said that India is going through a period of transition, both epidemiological and demographic transition. Infectious diseases are still persisting as major health problems in spite of having national programmes for the control of most of these diseases for almost half a century now.

Other lectures that followed in the morning session include 'Hypertension & chronic kidney disease' by Dr Dinesh Kullar from New Delhi, Dr. Dinesh Khullar informed that good control of blood pressure can prevent chronic kidney damage and disease. Blood pressure control to levels below 135/85 need to be achieved.  Dr BM Hegde, Former Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, delivered “UN Mehta Torrent Oration” on the topic 'Hypertension-In post modern medical era'. He emphasised that we should make sure we do not make our patients worse with side effects of drugs.

Dr C Venkata S Ram from Hyderabad highlighted newer developments like even elderly individuals need control of blood pressure. There was symposium on various drugs for hypertension which was chaired by Dr. Siddharth N Shah from Mumbai. Dr. Gurpreet S Wander was installed as the President of the Hypertension Society of India for the year 2012-13.

The conference will be formally inaugurated today evening by Prof. (Dr.) SS Gill, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Science, Faridkot
