Sutlej XI Crowned Champions of Inaugural USHA Deaf IPL Cricket Tournament

Jalandhar, February 28, 2014, Sutlej XI , captained by Subhankar Malik, defeated Raavi XI, captained by Surender Singh, to be crowned champions of the inaugural USHA DEAF IPL T20 cricket tournament, jointly organised by the All India Cricket Association for the Deaf (AICAD) and USHA International Limited, a trusted house hold consumer durables company. In the final match played at the Punjab Armed Police Sports Complex, Jalandhar, Sutlej batted first and put up a competitive total of 170 runs before bowling out Raavi for a paltry 115 in 17 overs to emerge winners. Vipul Patel, who belongs to Gujarat was adjudged Man of the Finals. In the semi-finals played yesterday, Sutlej and Raavi had recorded facile victories against Vyas XI and Chenab XI respectively to earn the right to play each other in the finals.
Kamal Sharma, State President of the BJP, was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony and handed over a host of prizes including the winner’s cheque of Rs 51,000, the runners-up cheque of Rs 21,000, the man of the match prize, a prize for the best bowler to Pradeep of Tamil Nadu, the player of the tournament to I Yadav of Maharashtra as well as mementos to all participants. I Yadav, the player of the tournament was also handed over the keys of a glittering new Yamaha bike by USHA.
The tournament received an overwhelming response as a total of six teams and players from 18 states participated. Visibly pleased by the success of the tournament, Komal Mehra, sports and events consultant, USHA International Limited, said, “We are thrilled at the response and excitement that we were able to generate from all participants for this unique initiative and we thank them from our heart. The quality of talent on display has motivated us to make this initiative even bigger in the upcoming years. We congratulate the winning team and all the other participants as well as the enthusiastic support staff for making this tournament a success. On behalf of USHA we wish all of them many more successes going forward and hope to support all these talented differently abled cricketers and individuals in the best way we can in the future.”
The uniqueness of this latest tournament around the most popular sport in the country is the fact that not only are the players of the competing teams differently abled but so are all the organizers and tournament officials, which swells up the participation of such people to a whopping 250. The winning team will be travelling to Dubai next to participate in an international T20 cricket tournament for the deaf to be also organized by AICAD.
The celebrity quotient of the final match was enhanced by the presence of Pooja the famous Punjabi singer. Other dignitaries present apart from Kamal Sharma included the likes of Anil Joshi (Local Government Minister), Rajinder Bhandari (Vice-Chairman, Planning Commission Punjab), Aman Mittal (Director, Lovely Professional University), Avtar Singh Makkar (President, SGPC), G.S. Sahota IPS (Addl.
