Vardhman Group Helps Build a Center for Rehabilitation at CMC Hospital

Ludhiana, March 29, 2017: Christian Medical College along with Vardhman Group is to build Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center at Brown road, Ludhiana from March 2017. There are many diseases that can lead to disability; the most common ones are brain injury, stroke, spinal cord damage, bone problems and many medical conditions. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) is a branch of modern (allopathic) system of medicine that improves functional ability and quality of life to those with disabilities.
Mr. SP Oswal, Managing Director of Vardhman Group mentioned that there is an urgent need for starting these services to cater to the people from Ludhiana city, Punjab and other Northwestern States. The center hopes to bring in all rehabilitation services such as Physiatrist (Rehabilitation physician), physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, Occupational therapists, counselor, social worker and Orthotic and Prosthetics facilities.
Dr Abraham G Thomas, Director CMC Ludhiana said that although a department of PMR was started in the year 2008 there was no comprehensive center attached to it. The department has been providing services to stroke patients, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, amputees and in patients with bleeding problems lime hemophilia. The proposed PMR center will be built as a joint venture of CMC Ludhiana and the Vardhman group.
Dr.Santosh Mathangi, Head of PMR department mentioned that over the last 8 years he has treated more than 3000 children with disabilities, nearly 1800 stroke patients and 500 spinal cord injury (SCI) patients got independent in life. The department also has provided more than 5000 supporting devices in the form of calipers, walkers, elbow crutches and wheelchairs free of cost to poor patients and to some at subsidized rates.
Dr. Jeyaraj D Pandian, Professor and Head, department of Neurology and deputy Director said that the proposed rehabilitation center will provide facilities for rehabilitation of neurological problems such as stroke; head injury and spinal cord diseases.
The center will start functioning in 2019 in the Vardhaman PMR block of Christian Medical College and will be managed by the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of CMC, where Dr. Santosh Mathangi is the head of the department and will be supported by a comprehensive team specialized in Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and orthotics.
