World Environment Day celebrated

Ludhiana, June 8, 2017: The local centre of The Institution of Engineers (India) celebrated the World Environment day today in association with Spring Dale Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana. The theme of the day was Connecting People with nature.
The Chief Guest of the occasion was Sh.Guneet Sethi from Punjab Pollution Control Board, Ludhiana. Ms.Avinash Kaur Walia, MD, Spring Dale School was the guest of honor.
Welcoming the guests, Er. Gurpreet Singh, Honorary Secretary said environment was a burning issue world over. It was therefore responsibility of every one to help preserve this environment.
The school introduction was given by Ms. Shikha and Mr. Yogesh. They highlighted the achievements of school in various fields.
The expert speaker of the day was Er. Puneet Pal Singh Cheema, AP, GNDEC, Ludhiana. He gave several examples as to how small community efforts have led to huge environmental benefits. Citing the example of rejuvenation of Kudamvati river, he elaborated how small group effort turned the tide to revive this river. He also shared the water harvesting at Hware Bazar and Ralegan Sidhi. He than gave example of terrace gardening in Kerala and how the city population is fast adopting this mode of environment saving. The problem of waste management in smart cities was highlighted with examples of Pune city’s innovative measures in reducing the land fill. Mysuru city garbage collection system was also discussed. In his address Brig. Mastinder Singh SM, Chairman re-emphasized the 3R mantra- Reduce, Recycle and Re-use.
Extending vote of thanks, Er. Arvind Dhingra said that the environment conservation should be the prime subject of importance for all of us so that we may leave this earth a happier place. A symbolic tree plantation drive was also carried out.
