Chennai, June 21, 2023 : Chennai’s leading super-specialty hospital, Prashanth Hospitals successfully performed a surgery on a 2-year-old girl suffering from a rare condition called ankylosed Temporomandibular joint. The child was unable to chew or speak owing to a very minute 3mm opening in the mouth because of ankylosed TMJ and the expert-based team of surgeons successfully performed the surgery at Prashanth Hospitals. Surgery was done to correct the mandibular movement, removing redundant tissues and rectify the condition of the mouth by making use of the graft.

Commenting on the surgery Dr. Kailash, Chief Anaesthetist from Prashanth Hospitals. said “ We had performed this complex procedure called Inter-positional arthroplasty with clinical precision since the opening was very small to almost 3 mm in size. Ankylosed TMJ is found to be common in kids with 5 to 15 years of age and the reason for this condition may be because of trauma or during delivery using forceps. The advanced technological capabilities at Prashanth Hospitals enabled us to perform this procedure with high level clinical precision. We are happy that the baby is recovering very well and performing this on a 2-year-old has been a challenge owing to small incisions and openings round mouth region. “

Generally this condition happens due to reasons like an injury, trauma, childhood deformities, delivery related complications and infections etc. Inter-positional arthroplasty is generally done at earlier age to prevent further complications or recurring surgeries in the future for the child. The complex procedure was performed by the expert team of doctors by operating and rectifying various joints and facial muscles in order to make the lower jaw and upper jaw flexible to masticate and speak.

The child is very stable and can use her mouth for her set of activities. Surgical intervention at right time has really helped the child recover better from her earlier complex condition.
