Ludhiana: Under the leadership of environmentalist and Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, around 250 heritage trees of Punjab were planted along the banks of Buddha Dariya near the village of Bhukhri Khurd. The state tree of Punjab, ‘Tahli’ (Sheesham), was given special prominence during this plantation drive. The saplings planted today included Neem, Peepal, Banyan (Bargad), Tahli, Mulberry (Shahtoot), and Grapefruit (Chakotra). Additionally, ornamental and aromatic plants like Mandakini, Rose, and Palm were also planted.

Village Sarpanch Satpal Singh shared that many of Punjab’s heritage trees are gradually disappearing. He had requested Sant Seechewal to provide saplings from his nurseries to help revive these species, which are on the verge of extinction in the region.

Sant Seechewal mentioned that the Neem and Mulberry saplings planted are already 5 to 7 feet tall to protect them from grazing animals. He emphasized that wherever excess land is available along the Buddha Dariya, mini forests will be developed. This initiative aims to create habitats for birds and restore the historical glory of the Buddha Dariya.

He further informed that although polluted and toxic water from dairies, factories, and municipal sources still flows into some parts of the river, clean water has now reached the Bhukhri Khurd section. This is being seen as the beginning of the end of pollution in the river. The cleanliness campaign will continue until clean water flows up to Walipur Kalan.

On this occasion, in celebration of clean water reaching the river near Bhukhri Khurd after 35 years, Baisakhi is being celebrated once again. An Akhand Path (continuous recitation of the Sikh holy scripture) has been initiated at the village Gurdwara Sahib, which will conclude on April 13. On this special occasion, the village Sarpanch Satpal Singh, along with other dignitaries, participated in the plantation drive along the riverbank.
