CII organises Work skills competition to promote Skill Development in the region 2– 5 March
Ludhiana, March 2, 2016: “Skilled labour is the most critical challenge being faced by the industry in the region today. There is a dire need to promote vocational training and skill development projects at all levels in the institutes, industry and the society as a whole to attain desired level of world class standards in skilled labour”, emphasized Mr S S Bhogal, Past Chairman, CII Punjab State Council & Managing Director Bhogal Exports while addressing the Inaugural Session of the 27th CII Regional Workskills Competition being organised by Confederation of Indian industry (CII) NR here at Advance Training Institute, Ludhiana from 2nd-5th March 2016. He mentioned that the current dispensation at the centre is doing a lot to ensure that skill development remains the most important agenda by creating a separate skill development ministry. He was happy to note that more than 150 youth are participating to test their skills while at the same time learning from their peers.

“It is also the responsibility of the industry to provide regular training to its workers from time to time to ensure that they acquire internationally benchmarked skills. The competitions are held with the support of the Directorate General of Employment & Training (D.G.E.&T), Ministry of Labour and Employment , Government of India”, he added.

“CII is proactively working in the field of skill development in the region and has initiated many projects and programmes in coordination with all stakeholders like the government, corporates, overseas agencies, the youth and the institutes to achieve the target of 500 million skilled workforce by 2022”, shared Mr Bhogal.

Mr Manjit Singh, Joint Director of Training and HOD, Advanced Training Institute welcomed the participants and mentioned that “The competition has received very good response from the industry, with workers participating from participants from companies like, Trident Ltd, Nestle, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, New Holland Tractors Ltd, Tata Motors Ltd, Denso India Ltd and Kiki Centre for Technology. Mr Singh appreciated and complemented CII for playing an active role in promoting skills in the country”. He mentioned that the comparison with countries like USA, South Korea and China provide us with a clear understanding of how much the country needs to achieve in terms of skilling the youth. He opined that these competitions help to inspire the youth to achieve a sense of satisfaction while ensuring livelihood.

Mr Baljinder Singh, Principal ITI Ludhiana, shared his experience of how the institute has improved over the years through the support of Industry. He lauded the efforts of CII, while mentioning that the institute has been chosen as the first Model ITI in the state.

Mr Inderjit Nagpal, Past Chairman, CII Ludhiana Zonal Council & Managing Director, Haveli Ram Bansi Lal thanked the Advanced Training Institute, Ludhiana for supporting the competition and further mentioned that “Through such skill competitions, CII aims to provide a unique platform to the youth to showcase their skills, learn from each other practically and hence promote skill development”. He emphasized that it is important to instil the right attitude in the youth of today.

Regional Workskills Competition is held every year in which workers compete in various trades like Electrician fitters, millers, motor mechanic, turner, welder, tool & die, tractor & motor mechanics.
