3-Day Dance Workshop Organized By Apeejay College Of Fine Arts

Jalandhar, April 25, 2015: The 3-day Dance Workshop organized by P.G Department of Dance of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar concluded today. Pt Satish Shukla, a renowned Kathak Dancer and nephew of Kathak Maestro Pt Birju Maharaj was the Resource Person.  Pt. Shukla has to his credit numerous stage performances in India and abroad and has been a recipient of many prestigious awards. During the 3 day workshop, Pt. Shukla familiarized the students with various nuances of Kathak such as Lehkari, Tihai, Bhava Ang, Kasak Masak, Kataksh etc.  Addressing the gathering during the inauguration, Pt. Shukla rued the fact that traditional way of starting Kathak is now slowly dying out.  He explained and demonstrated different kathak techniques.  Dr. Sucharita, Principal of the College extended a warm welcome to Pt. Shukla saying that it was a historic occasion as many years back, his uncle Pt. Birju Maharaj had also performed on Apeejay’s stage. She said that it is a privilege and honour for the students of the College to be trained by the eminent resource person during the workshop.  On the second day of Workshop, Pt. Shukla taught the students various dance moves of the Tandav Nritya and Tihai.  He said that it is important that the students learn the intricacies of the hand movements.  He stated that since there are only a handful of Kathak teachers in the country, it is important that  the new practitioners learn  the correct techniques so that this dance form continues to flourish in its pristine glory.  During the valedictory, Pt. Shukla said that the students of the Colleg had immense potential to become renowned Kathak exponents in India and abroad.  Dr. Sucharita thanked the resource person and said that they look forwarded to having him again in the College for another illumining interaction.
