3 years after she went missing, Bengal woman's skeleton found in septic tank

Kolkata, June 25 (HS): West Bengal's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) found a woman's bones from a sewage tank three years after she went missing. As a result of this development, the dead woman's husband was apprehended and charged with her murder. Tumpa Mandal, the woman, went missing in March 2020, prompting her father, Laxman Halder, to file a missing persons report with the police. Following a preliminary inquiry, authorities detained the woman's husband, Bhombal Mandal, in April 2020.

However, since the police were unable to locate any evidence relating to the case, the judge granted him bail. The woman's father subsequently petitioned the Kolkata High Court for a higher investigation body to look into the issue.

In response to his petition, the Kolkata High Court sent the case to the West Bengal CID for further investigation. On the directives of the high court, the CID took over the investigation of the event on June 13.

HOW THE CRIME WAS RESOLVED: The woman's husband was questioned again by the investigation agency, and after 10 days, he confessed to murdering his wife. He also claimed to have buried her remains in a sewage tank. Bhombal Mandal was charged with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. The man said that he murdered his wife in 2020 when they were living in a rented house in Bengal's Milanpally and placed her body in a septic tank.

When the CID examined the septic tank in the area indicated by the accused, they discovered the woman's bones as well as jewellery that belonged to her. According to CID sources, the accused Bhombal suffocated Tumpa using a pillow. Officials believe the man murdered his wife because he suspected she was having an extramarital affair.
