Chandigarh, March 10, 2024: As many as 300 people including doctors participated in an Ivy Hospital’s walkathon on kidney disease awareness to mark World Kidney Day at Sukhna Lake on Sunday.

The walkathon was flagged-off by Chandigarh Mayor Kuldeep Kumar. Dr Avinash Srivastava, director urology & renal transplant and Dr Raka Kaushal director nephrology at Ivy were also present.

During the occasion, Kuldeep Kumar stressed upon the need to keep kidneys fit and healthy.

He said that regular exercise, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, keeping bp and diabetes in control can help avoid kidney diseases.

Dr Avinash Srivastava said, “2.2 lakh new patients develop chronic kidney failure in India every year and it is also the 6th fastest growing cause of death. High bp, diabetes, BPH, untreated kidney stones and UTI are the main reasons for kidney failure in India.”

Dr Raka Kaushal said that because of the growing population of diabetes and hypertension, each year about 2.20 lakh new patients develop chronic renal failure in the country. Ironically, transplant takes place in only about 6000 cases, because of lack of awareness of people and unavailability of donors, she maintained.

The prevalence of this disease has almost doubled over the past decade and is expected to increase further due to rise in risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, stress, and unhealthy eating habits, she informed.
