The question of who will be the next President of the United States is over: American voters have chosen Donald Trump. Even swing states have cast their votes in favour of Trump, marking a new chapter in American history. In his previous term as President, Trump was known for his quick, decisive actions, a reputation that appears to have contributed to his landslide victory in the 2024 presidential election.
In the coming days, Trump is expected to make a series of impactful decisions aimed at making America great once more. His campaign focused on key issues such as "America First," inflation, the economy, immigration, and international matters like the Ukraine-Russia war and relations with Israel and Bangladesh. Known for his decisive leadership, Trump reiterated in his victory speech that migrants must come to the U.S. through legal channels, stressing the need for valid visas rather than border crossings.
Trump's strong relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has garnered attention globally, and with his return to office, Indo-U.S. relations are anticipated to strengthen further. Increased trade between India and the U.S. is expected, and the question of America’s foreign policy in the Asian subcontinent remains a focus. In his statements, Trump emphasised his stance against war, suggesting that an era of renewed peace talks could be on the horizon. He has indicated that efforts toward diplomatic resolution, especially in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, will be a priority, with hopes of reducing global tensions through negotiation. Prime Minister Modi’s previous efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region underscore this diplomatic approach, and many await Trump’s foreign policy direction in the Middle East.
Trump is also known for his firm stance against militancy, sparking optimism that peace talks may soon resume in areas affected by conflict. It is hoped that a renewed atmosphere of diplomacy will emerge to replace the havoc and destruction of past conflicts.
CANADA UPDATES VISA GUIDELINES, GRANTING IMMIGRATION OFFICERS GREATER DISCRETION
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced new visa guidelines that give immigration officers discretionary power to issue single-entry or multiple-entry tourist visas for up to ten years. Immigration officers will carefully review each applicant’s qualifications before making a final decision on the type of visa granted. The applicant’s letter of support will also undergo a detailed evaluation by immigration authorities.
The changes raise questions regarding past immigration practices, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when many applicants who had applied through the points system felt that their human rights were overlooked. During that period, Canadian immigration policies prioritised granting permanent residency (PR) to local residents over international applicants, even with lower points. This led many international applicants, who had awaited Canadian PR under the points system, to feel marginalized. As always, the issuance of PR remains within the Canadian government’s authority under rules set by immigration officials.
