50 doctors attend Max Hospital CME on Oncology

The doctors speak during a Max Super Speciality Hospital CME on Oncology held at Hotel Western Court, Chandigarh Friday night.

Chandigarh, December 13, 2014: As many as 50 prominent physicians and surgeons of the region attended a Max Hospital CME on Oncology at Hotel Western Court, Chandigarh last night.

During occasion,  Dr Sachin Gupta, Consultant, Medical and Hemato-Oncology  at Max Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH), Mohali delivered a lecture on ‘Role Of Targeted Therapies in Oncology’. Dr Gautam Goyal, Medical Oncology emphasised the importance of proper diagnosis and staging of cancer patients before starting treatment to enable oncologists to treat accurately. Dr.  Sunandan Sharma and Dr Ritesh Pruthy both Surgical Cancer Specialists at MSSH discussed the pitfalls  in cancer diagnosis and enlightened the audience regarding approach to early diagnosis of various cancers. They stressed upon need for early identification of symptoms to diagnose cancer.

Dr Shaveta Gupta, Gynae Oncologist Specialist stressed the importance of screening and early diagnosis in breast and cervix cancer. She also emphasised on availability of vaccination for preventing HPV Infection which could cause Cervix Cancer. Dr Pankaj Arora, Consultant, Radiation Oncology threw light on latest technology in Radiation Therapy like IMRT, IGRT which helps in better cure with less side effects.

Dr Sachin stressed upon the newer drugs and modalities of treating cancer by use of which side effects were less besides esponse to treatment was much better. Many cancers which were thought to incurable cancer could now be treated. There were newer technologies like Immunohistochemistry and Flowcytometry, cytogenetics which helped in finding exact type of cancer and help guide treatment.

Lung, Breast, Head & Neck cancer, prostate, colon, stomach, cervix cancer were most common cancers in our country, informed Dr Pankaj Arora. Breast, cervix and ovarian cancer were most common women cancer in our country. Tobacco related cancers formed major chunk of cancers in India. Head & Neck cancer, lung cancer and many others were totally avoidable if tobacco products were restricted and banned, he added.

Dr Sunandan Sharma said that around 70% cases diagnosed with lung cancer were initially diagnosed as Chest Tuberculosis. Nearly 50% patients of Rectal Cancer were mistreated as cases of piles before being correctly diagnosed, he informed.
