59th annual athletic meet of GNDEC gets off to a colorful start

Ludhiana, February 11, 2019: The 59th annual athletic meet of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana got off to a colorful start today in the college stadium. The chief guest for the event was S.Nirmal Singh Grewal, international hammer throw athlete. The meet began with the traditional march past of athletes under the flags of various departments. The march past was led by Harshveer Singh, student of 3rd year Computer Science who represented India in roller skating during the Asian Games 2018 held in Jakarata He was followed by NCC cadets of ground and air wing. The band from Nankana Sahib Public School played during the march past. In his welcome address, Dr. Sehijpal Singh said that college was for holistic development of the budding technocrats. The athletic meet is a regular feature of the college and helps student break the monotony.
Apprising the audience about the achievements of chief guest, Dr. Jagbir Singh, President Sports said that S.Grewal helped India bag silver medal in Teheran Asian Games, 1974. He was a record holder for railways for 22 years and remained national champion for eight years. In his address S. Nirmal Singh Grewal, Chief Guest said that Punjab was passing through a difficult phase. Youth needed to be brought to sports field to bring back the past glory of sports. Citing a healthy mind lives in a healthy body , he said that every student should take up some or the other sport to keep himself fit.
The Olympic torch was lit by Gurwinder Kaur, Sukhdeep Kaur, Gurmeet Kaur and Tanisha Gupta all girl athletes who had represented college and University. The meet was declared open by hoisting of flag and releasing of balloons by the chief guest and principal. The athletes took the oath to follow the spirit of spostsmanship in all the competitions. The inaugural ceremony concluded by awarding cash prizes and medallions to the winners of college color and university award winning teams and athletes. Giving details of the events to be held during the course of two days event, Dr. Gunjan Bhardwaj, Incharge Sports said over 22 track and field events were planned for two days of the meet. Today’s events included 1500m race for boys and girls, Javelin throw, High Jump, 100m heats. The college best athlete shall be declared after the meet tomorrow.
Dr. Jasmaninder Singh Grewal, Dean (Students welfare) thanked the print and electronic media alongwith students for making the inaugural ceremony a success.
