Chief Guest Dr. Sardara S Johal stressed on the role of media and politics in India. He said, “From last couple of years, media has shifted its focus from service to business. Commercials are involved and politicians are playing a significant role in this transformation. There is severe scenario of recession in nation. The flow of money is going into the pockets of unwanted big people especially aged politicians. The people are fighting for CAA but we are still dealing with many basic problems of poverty and unemployment. Media should wake up as its high time now and focus on ground level issues of nation.”
Another speaker named Ashutosh, who is a well known media face in Delhi and alumnus of JNU also stressed on the role of media in society. Highlighting the role of a journalist he said, “A true reporter is a one who speaks truth based on facts and never hides it from the common public. For this, he needs a lot of courage and motivation. Recently, a TV channel attempted a sting operation in JNU case which is a perfect example of good journalism. Such courage is missing in media fraternity. Young students of Journalism should be prepared accordingly so that a change can be seen.”
One of the speakers Satnam S Manak said that the current problems and needs of Punjabi Journalism can be redressed only if the education is localised in Punjabi Language. Punjabi Journalism abroad should free itself from ultra-radicalism. He also concentrated on the media getting commercialized and also advised to avoid sensationalizing the news.
Charanjit S Channi, Chairman, CT Group said that in the current era of globalisation and multi culturalism, Punjabi youth need to have command in English and Hindi Language along with Punjabi. He said that it is the responsibility of Punjabi Journalism that it should act as custodians of the society by shunning commercialism.
