Chandigarh, December 31, 2014: The 67th annual session of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IICHE), the CHEMCON-2014 was concluded at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh on Tuesday, CHEMCON-2014 was hosted by Chandigarh Regional Centre of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) in collaboration with Dr.SS Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (Dr. SSB UICET) of Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh campus.

The last day of the mega techfest started with an invited lecture by Prof Ram Prasad of Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology of Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi. Prof Prasad threw light on the polluting hazards of the combustion engines being used. He named the hazardous chemicals emitted from the exhausts of the engines used mainly of vehicles which are far more hazardous than the traditionally known carbon dioxide (CO2). After mentioning the specifications of gaseous emissions by engines used these days, he claimed that engines in practice in our country nowadays are still years behind the modified ‘euro 6’ emitting least of the chemicals of all the engines known today. He came up with a solution to the hazardous emissions by modifications in both the diesel and petrol engines by employing newly researched catalytic convertors in the exhausts of the engines. Prof Prasad talked of the technical aspects of the requisite modifications.

The last CHEMCON Distinguished Speaker (CDS) awardee of the mega event was Prof Sourav Pall, who is serving as Director of National Chemical Laboratory of Pune and the winner of most prestigious award of Chemical Sciences, Dr SS Bhatnagar Award.

Being a chemist by profession, Prof Pal spoke on the topic of “Multi scale simulation in integration of Chemistry and promotion of chemical technology”. The director of premier research body of the country emphasised on the modelling of designs in chemical industry at beginners’ level which can bring about a complete change in conventional industry technology. He, in context to sustainable development, claimed that solar energy production has to be made economical if sustainable development is to sustain. He stressed on using computational chemistry which is basically the use of computer programs in finding solutions to various chemical problems which can revolutionise chemical industry.

The whole session was chaired by Dr Sudip K. Das, the Joint honorary Secretary of IIChE for 2014 and the chairman of national organising committee for CHEMCON-2014 and Vice Chancellor of Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, Prof G. D. Yadav. Chairman of Local Organising Committee of CHEMCON-2014, Emeritus Prof S. K. Sharma also witnessed the session.

The institute also hosted research paper presentations by research scholars who had arrived the city beautiful from all over the nation. Organising secretary for CHEMCON-2014, Prof V. K. Rattan, took care of the whole event.
