68 Violators of Drugs & Cosmetic Act 1940 face imprisonment and fines of Rs.31.13 lakh in Punjab


Chandigarh, February 18, 2016: On the direction of Punjab's Health & Family Welfare Minister Sh.Surjit Kumar Jyani, the Department of Health & Family Welfare Punjab has launched a drive against the nefarious elements indulging in the malpractice of manufacturing or trading of illegal and sub standard medicines in the State. The Department has already tightened its noose around many such violators of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 across the State. During year 2015, 68 such defaulters have been awarded imprisonments of upto 1-5 years, along with penalties of Rs. 31.13 Lakh by different courts in the state. This was stated here today by Sh. Hussan Lal, Secretary Health & Medical Education cum Food & Drugs Commissioner, Punjab. He said that a centralized Drug Cell has already been formed comprising the three Zonal Licensing Authorities which is ensuring strict enforcement of Drug & Cosmetic Act and pursuing prompt legal action against the violators of the Act.
Sh. Hussan Lal further stated that In Ferozepur alone 22 violators have been sentenced to imprisonments and imposed a fine of Rs. 10.22 Lakh. Similarly, in Jalandhar 9 such violators have been imprisoned and fined to the tune of Rs. 2.35 Lakh. In Bathinda 7 violators had to face imprisonment alongwith the fines to the tune of Rs. 7.25 Lakh. 6 defaulters in SAS Nagar had to face imprisonment along with fine of 3.18 Lakh, In Gurdaspur 6 violators were caught and had to face imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1.35 Lakh, 5 violators in Ludhiana faced imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1.65 Lakh, In Sangrur similar action against 4 violators, in Amritsar 4 violators, in Hoshiarpur 2 violators and in Patiala 3 violators had been taken. These violators were booked under the various Sections of the Drugs & Cosmetics Act 1940.
Sh. Hussan Lal warned such anti-social elements, those who are indulging in sale or manufacturing of misbranded, sub standard and illegal drugs of strict action and said that such violators shall not be spared at any cost. Strict legal action will be taken against any individual or firm. found violating the provisions of Drug & Cosmetics act 1940. He also informed that 218 different type of drugs are available free of cost in Govt. Hospitals of the State for which strict quality measures are maintained. He appealed the people to visit the Govt. Hospitals and avail the facility of these free medicines whenever required.
