Talk on “Management of jaundice in newborn babies”

Ludhiana, September 30, 2012: Department of Pediatrics, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana organised the annual conference of Indian Academy of Pediatrics, National Neonatology forum and Intensive care chapters of Punjab.

Dr. A G Thomas, Director CMC&Hospital, Ludhiana, inaugurated the conference and congratulated the department for undertaking this academic exercise. The conference was attended by about 200 neonatologists and Pediatricians and from Punjab and adjoining states.

The academic session of the conference started with a talk on “Management of jaundice in newborn babies” which is a common problem in newborns. Dr Praveen Kumar, Professor of Neonatology from PGI Chandigarh, talked about the topic in great detail and discussed on when to take action in newborn babies with Jaundice.

Later he also answered the queries of the audience to their satisfaction.

The session was then followed by a talk by Dr. Vikram Datta on the “Management of pain” in critically sick children in hospital set up. He urged the neonatologists and pediatrician to be more sensitive to this issue because it is not only more humane but also improves the survival and behavior of sick newborns.

In intensive care of critically sick and injured children, Prof Sunit Singhi, Head of Advanced Pediatric center at PGI Chandigarh, highlighted that Hospital acquired infection should be prevented in such children by appropriate Hand hygiene and other measures. Dr.Kanav Anand from Sir Ganga Ram hospital Delhi discussed about kidney problems in sick children in Pediatric Intensive care unit and emphasised on early detection of such disorders.

Dr. Arun Bansal from PGI Chandigarh delivered a talk on the topic of “Rational Use of antibiotics” and it was followed by a penal discussion by eminent Pediatricians, Dr. Jugesh Chhatwal, Dr. H.S.Bains, Dr.Gurmeetkaur and Dr. Vikas Bansal. The topic generated lot of interest among the audiences and appropriate use of antibiotics was highlighted to prevent antibiotic resistance and for patient safety.

According to Dr. Gurmeet Kaur, Head and Professor of Pediatrics at CMCH, the conference was successful in meeting its goal of providing continuing medical education to Pediatrician and nurses who take care of sick children.
