Chandigarh, January 22, 2014: As many as 80 employees of State Bank of India took part in a health talk on ‘How to choose the right specialist for yourself’ organised by Max Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH), Mohali at SBI office , Sector 17 here today.

Addressing employees, Dr Manmohan Bedi, Sr Consultant- Surgical Gastroenterologist, MSSH  said that medical and surgical fields have got divided into scientific branches involving different body systems like cardiac for heart diseases, gastroenterology for diseases of digestion & stomach related issues, neurosciences for diseases of brain, spinal cord and nervous system, pulmonology for diseases of lung, oncology for cancer etc.

Whenever one fell ill, he or she was often perplexed which doctor to approach. In yesteryears specialists were few and everyone would rely on general practitioner for his complete health needs. As medical science made rapid advances, it became difficult for the physician also to keep pace with advances related to all systems and need for specialists arose, he pointed out.

Dr Bedi said further, in past few years the further subdivision of these specialties happened into sub-branches that dealt with only one organ. These were hepatology for liver diseases, paediatric cardiology for diseases of heart in children, paediatric oncology for children with cancer, cardiac electro physiologist for heart arrhythmias, thoracic surgeon for disease of the chest other than heart, surgical gastroenterologist for benign and cancerous diseases of digestive system, neonatologist for newborns (infants) etc.  With such bewildering range of specialization anyone could get confused and many times it became difficult for patients to choose from the range of specialists they should consult for their particular disease, he said adding the patients could reap maximum benefit from advancements made in medical science which would save time and energy.”

The super specialists often received patients who were referred to them by the general physician, surgeon or medical specialist. One could choose the doctor by taking the cue from the specialties mentioned below against the system involved. There would still be some overlap between specialties but your physician would help you in choosing the right specialist, Dr Bedi asserted.

Advising the people to not to ignore their symptoms and consult a doctor rather than going to quacks or chemists, Dr Bedi warned that chemists might be able to give medicine for your symptoms but he would not be able to diagnose the problem. Many times, even major problems might present with subtle symptoms and by the time you would reach the doctor it could be too late. cautioned Dr Bedi.

Meanwhile Dr Bedi also clarified on general terms used for various branches that were as; Internal Medicine- deals in prevention, diagnosis & treatment of adult diseases, Gastroenterology – related to digestive system, Hepato – related to liver, Neuro – related to nervous system like brain, spinal cord and nerves , Cardiac – related to heart, Thoracic and pulmonary – related to lungs and chest cavity, Ophthalmology – related to eyes, Orthopaedics – related to bones and joints, Paediatrics – related to diseases of infants, children, adolescents till the age of 18 years, Urology – related to surgery of urinary system , Nephrology – related to kidney diseases , ENT – related to ear, nose, throat diseases , Oncology – related to cancer, Radiology – related to imaging of body e.g; X-ray, Ultrasound , CT Scan , Endocrinology – related to diseases of hormones, Gynaecology – related to diseases of female reproductive system , Medical specialist- related to general diseases of body , Surgical specialist – related to general surgical diseases of body & Dermatologist – related to skin diseases.
