Hoshiarpur, August 19, 2013: According to the census conducted in the year 2011by the union Home Ministry 6.1% increase in education literacy was recorded in the Punjab. As per census of 2001 education literacy rate in the state was 69.7% which has gone upto 75.8% after the census of 2011. District Hoshiarpur of the state tops in this rate with 84.6 % as per census of 2011.
This was stated by Varun Roojam here today.
He said that Punjab Government is taking all necessary steps to provide quality education to all and efforts are being made to achieve the target of 100% literacy rate in the state.
The Deputy Commissioner said that Punjab Government has spent Rs 24 crores in the district to strengthen the education infrastructure in the district. He said that there are 235 government high &higher secondary schools in the district in which Punjab Government has built 50 new classrooms, 89 labs, 154 Art Rooms to provide quality education to the children in the government schools. Likewise Ra 12 crore has been spent on upgrading 21 middle schools and Punjab Government is providing Rs 1.76 crore for improving education infrastructure in the district every year. He added that 24 Lac scholarship has been provided to minority students for providing education.
He said  that Punjab Government was establishing a Polytechnic College at Talwara with the cost of Rs 15 Crore, C-Pyte with Rs 6 crore to provide professional education and Adarsh Schools were being established with the cost of Rs 5 crore to provide quality education in the Kandia Area. He added that rupees one crore were distributed in the district for renovation of schools under the Backward Region Grant Fund Scheme.
Roojam said that 36 students of the district stood in merit list of tenth class PSEB Exams and district stood third in overall position. He further said that in school sports students of the district won 13 Gold, 13 Silver and 10 Bronze medals and got 2nd position in overall performance and two students were selected for National Inspire Award.
DC said that Rs 67 crore has been given to the district under the SSA scheme out of which Rs 24 crores has been spent for constructing new building of a model school, constructing 89 Class Rooms, 80 Toilets for girls and 10 bathrooms for physically challenged students, 10 rooms for Primary Headmasters, 53 ramps in schools, major repair in 58 schools and 83,759 meter boundary wall of schools.
