AAP MP Raghav Chadha from Punjab initiative's led Centre to bring Historical Relics of Maharaja Ranjit Singh

New Delhi 30 November 2024: Due to the constant initiative by Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha in Parliament, the central government has decided to bring back historical artifacts related to Maharaja Ranjit Singh from abroad. 
This initiative is seen not only as an effort to preserve India’s history and heritage but also as a major achievement for Raghav Chadha.
Issue Raised in Parliament
On July 24, 2024, during a special discussion in the Rajya Sabha, Raghav Chadha raised the matter of bringing back Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s royal throne from Britain. He called it a vital step for India’s cultural heritage and urged the government to expedite the process of reclaiming all ancient and historic artifacts belonging to India.
Government’s Response
Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a letter to Raghav Chadha, stated that since independence, 358 historical artifacts have been brought back to India, 345 of which were reclaimed in the last decade. He emphasized that the government is actively working under the 1972 Antiquities and Art Treasures Act and international agreements to repatriate these valuable artifacts.
He also assured that the government is committed to reclaiming relics taken during British rule, although the process is influenced by foreign laws and the policies of the concerned nations.
Historical Significance of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Relics
Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s royal throne is a symbol of India’s glorious past. It was taken to Britain during colonial rule and is currently housed in London. Repatriating this artifact would be a significant step in India’s cultural resurgence.
Government’s Commitment
The government has assured that diplomatic channels will be used to bring back not just artifacts related to Maharaja Ranjit Singh but also other significant treasures. This initiative marks a substantial effort to preserve India’s cultural identity.
Raghav Chadha’s Reaction
Expressing his satisfaction, Raghav Chadha said, “Artifacts belonging to great personalities like Maharaja Ranjit Singh are an integral part of our culture and history. Bringing them back is our responsibility, and I am proud to have played a role in this mission.”
