The Election Commission of India has announced by-elections to four assembly constituencies namely Jalalabad, Dakha, Phagwara and Mukerian in Punjab on October 21, 2019.
Congress has announced its candidates where as SAD-BJP alliance candidates are expected to be announced soon. BJP will be fielding its candidates in Phagwara and Mukerian and SAD will be fielding its candidates in Dakha and Jalalabad constituencies.
Union Minister for State Som Parkash was elected to Lok Sabha from Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency. Both the constituencies namely Phagwara and Mukerian fall under Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency. Phagwara assembly constituency was represented by BJP’s Som Parkash and Mukerian was represented by Congress Rajnish Kumar Babbi. Similarly, Daka was represented by AAP’s HS Phoolka who had resigned and Jalalabad was represented by SAD state president Sukhbir Singh Badal who has now been elected to Lok Sabha.
The results of by-elections will clearly predict the future scenario of Punjab politics. BJP state president Shawet Malik, Union Minister for State Som Parkash, SAD state president Sukhbir Singh Badal, Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee presiudent Sunil Kumar Jakhar’s prestige is on stake.
