Chandigarh, October 28, 2024: On the eve of World Stroke Day, a team of doctors from LIVASA Hospital, Mohali including Dr Vineet Saggar director neurosurgery & endovascular surgery, Dr Pardeep Kumar Sharma neurologist, Dr Swati Garg and Dr Jaslovleen Kaur Sidhu the neurologists & Dr Jaspreet Singh Randhwa neurosurgeon addressed a press conference on brain stroke awareness and its latest treatment options available here on Monday.

Dr Vineet Saggar said,” With a new mechanical thrombectomy technique, which is now available at LIVASA Hospital Mohali, the stroke patients can be treated in selected cases till 24 hours. In this technique the clot is either aspirated or taken out of the brain with the help of a stent without opening the brain.”

He also shared that LIVASA Hospital, which is now running the largest stroke ready hospital chain in entire Punjab, has performed more than 500 successful neuro interventions so far.

Dr Pardeep Kumar Sharma said that stroke is emerging as a new epidemic worldwide.

India accounts for 60 % of all stroke patients globally, informed Dr Swati Garg.

Dr Jaspreet Singh Randhwa said that the reason for increased incidence in India is lack of awareness about the disease per se and the methods of prevention. Stokes are responsible for more deaths annually than those attributed to AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined and yet it remains a silent epidemic.

Dr Jaslovleen Kaur Sidhu while highlighting the time importance in treating stroke patients said that every minute after the onset of a stroke the 1.90 million brain cells die. Thus, patients need to be rushed earliest at a hospital with comprehensive stroke care, a multidisciplinary team of emergency physicians, neurologists, interventional neuro-radiologists, neurosurgeons, anesthetists and critical care physicians.
