Ludhiana, June 5, 2024: In a bid to take steps for environmental sustainability in Ludhiana, the district administration today launched 'Wake Up Ludhiana- an Agenda for Environment'. 

Presiding over a preliminary meeting of the project, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sakshi Sawhney directed the officials of concerned departments to chalk out a detailed plan for environmental sustainability in  Ludhiana besides increasing greenery.

The administration would work with PAU experts to  identify and find sustainable solutions for  different locations in the district where there is substantially less tree cover. Steps would be taken to prepare those areas for plantation and in sync with the monsoon season, mass plantation drives with citizen participation would be undertaken. 

Sawhney also ordered that free saplings be provided to all citizens so that each one can plant one.   National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), DFO, Rural Development Department would all participate in this event. NHAI was also asked to formulate a strategy to develop vertical gardens and ensure greening on the NH. On being asked about development of cycle lanes along with highways, the NHAI officials informed that proposal has been made and would be followed up. 

The Deputy Commissioner also told the officials to mandatorily ensure green offices and also take up solar lighting, water conservation measures as well as appoint electricity Marshalls. Marks in the annual performance review would also be given for those taking up beat practices to promote environment sustainability. On similar lines, a green campus initiative would be launched for all educational institutions in the district. A green self audit for industries would also be undertaken with the help of GMDIC and PAU. 
 
Sawhney also said that it was bounden duty of every individual to work for an inheritable home for our children. Soliciting fulsome support of people in this noble cause, she called upon them to participate in the mass plantation drives to be launched shortly. She also stated that practically feasible solutions would be invited from the general public for improving their own neighbourhood environmentally. This Green Hackathon would be launched shortly and for ideas that are found feasible, action would be taken for implementation.
